The Leaf's Tiny Doorways /

Look closely at the underside of a leaf and you'll find thousands of microscopic pores called stomata (singular: stoma). Each one is framed by a pair of specialized cells called guard cells, which act like a doorway that can open or close.

Why Plants Need an Open Door in Daylight /

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants build sugars using light energy:

$$\ce{CO2 + H2O ->[light] organic\ molecules + O2}$$

Notice the raw material on the left: carbon dioxide. A plant cannot make its own \(\ce{CO2}\) — it has to pull it in from the surrounding air, and the only route in is through the stomata. So whenever light is available and photosynthesis can happen, stomata open to let \(\ce{CO2}\) diffuse into the leaf.

This is why stomata are typically open during the day — daylight is when the plant can actually use the \(\ce{CO2}\).

How Guard Cells Open and Close / Guard Cells

The opening and closing is driven by water pressure inside the guard cells, called turgor pressure.

  • In light, guard cells actively pump potassium ions in, water follows by osmosis, and the cells swell.
  • Swelling makes the guard cells bow outward, opening the pore.
  • In the dark, ions and water leave the guard cells, they go limp, and the pore closes.

An Open Door Has a Cost /

Water vapor escapes through the same opening that lets \(\ce{CO2}\) in. This loss of water vapor is called transpiration — a side effect, not the purpose, of stomatal opening.

Key Takeaway /

Stomata open in daylight because that's when photosynthesis can occur, and photosynthesis requires a steady supply of \(\ce{CO2}\).
